Dan began his colorful career by capturing 4th in the NCAA HWT division in 1958. He continued to collect titles yearly: 1960 he was 2nd in the National AAU freestyle division and 5th in the Olympic Games at 191 lbs. In 1961-1964 he took first in the National AAU freestyle division. Also, during that time span, he took the gold in Greco Roman National AAU division, 4th and 3rd in Freestyle World Championships and picked up 3rd in freestyle at the Olympic Games. He won the Pan American Games Tryouts in 1963 but was unable to compete due to an injury. Dan is introduced by his former coach, Bill Smith.
