In John DeGeorge we have one
of those rare individuals who could easily
qualify in the category of competitor/coach. John began his wrestling
career at Omaha South as a freshman, coached by Mickey Sparano (’84
Hall) for three years and by Beau Haizlip (’84 Hall ) his senior
year. During that time he was only defeated 3x wrestling at 112 and placed
4th at State with his team taking the First Place title for the 3rd year
in a row. During his sophomore year he was undefeated at 133 lbs and was
a member of the team taking their 4th State title in a row. His junior
year (133 lb) showed only one loss while taking the South High Inv. Champ,
City/Metro Champ, District Champ, State Champ, while the team took their
5th State Title in a row. His senior year showed one loss and one draw.
He was North High Invitational Champ, District Champ, and State Champ.
His high school record stands at 78-5-1 and he gained the Nebraska/Iowa
High School All American status his senior year. He wrestled two years
in college qualifying for nationals and taking 4th place his freshman
year. His coaching career began at Millard (Millard South ) where he coached
for 20 years and had 17 State Champs with an 85-33 record, Creighton Prep
4 years with 5 State Champs and a 28-5 record, Cathedral 1 year and 1
State Champ, Omaha Gross 6 years and 11 State Champs and a 47-2 record.
Omaha Gross won 4 straight titles while he was there. While at Millard
he coached 2 3x State Champs and one 2x State Champ repeating the 2x State
Champ notoriaty at Omaha Gross. Also at Gross they took in 4 consecutive
State Titles. Dave Clark, one of his 3x State Champs, was inducted into
the NSWCA Hall of Fame in 2004. John feels he has been “very fortunate
to be coached by three great men: Coach Cletus Fischer, Coach Mickey Sparano,
and Coach Beauford Haizlip. I have never forgotten nor will I ever forget
these three men!” John is introduced by his high school coach, Beau
Haizlip, Hall ’84.
