An incredible record
of 200-7 in three years of high school in Rochester, N.Y. stamps Mel as
one of the more outstanding contenders for wresting honors. Coming to
Omaha his college career continued to soar with a reord of 103-4 in four
years wrestling at 177 lbs. His biggest thrill is remembered as defeating
a college wrestler that had placed in the NCAA New York State Invitational
when Mel was a junior in high school.
Additional jewels in his crown came when he placed 3rd in the NAIA as
a college freshman, 2nd as a junior and was NAIA Champ as a sophomore
and senior. He also won the 1969 Great Plains Open Tournament in Lincoln
and received the Most Valuable Wrestler Award at UNO in 1971.
Still close to the sport Mel has been the assistant coach at Father Flanagan
High School since 1983. During this time Flanagan has produced a State
Chamnp and four state placers but more importantly two young men have
earned college scholarships. Mel states, “It has been my purpose
to not only instruct these young men in wrestling techniques, but I have
also tried to teach them life values and have endeavored to set a good
example.”
