Mike’s high school campaigning was done across the river in Mason City, Iowa where he managed a fourth and a second place finish his junior and senior seasons. Nissen crossed the river to attend UNL in
1958 where coaches Bill Smith, Mickey Sporano and Bob Mancuso took over his tutelage.

At UNL Nissen brought a National Collegiate Title to UNL at 123 pounds in 1963 to add to his Big 8 runner-up finish and a prior bronze medal in the national contest. Nissen was undefeated in dual meet competition while at UNL.
